1877<$3> AU55 NGC. Gold coins did not circulate on the East Coast in 1877, although that situation would change in a couple of years. The Philadelphia Mint struck only minimal quantities of most gold denominations, with the exception of the double eagle, which had export and bank reserve purposes. The 1877 three dollar gold piece had a tiny emission of 1,468 business strikes and 20 proofs. Presumably, the business strikes were coined only to keep the proofs from becoming major contemporary rarities, which had been the case for the 1875 and 1876 proof-only issues. Surprisingly few 1877 pieces were set aside. As of (6/06), NGC has certified only four Mint State examples. This unmarked representative has plentiful prooflike luster in recessed areas, and is problem-free save for a rose-russet spot above the right ribbon loop. Encapsulated in a former generation holder.
From The Derrick Snider Collection.
