1877 20C PR66 PCGS. Walter Breen, in his 1977 Encyclopedia of United States and Colonial Proof Coins, writes that the 1877 proof-only twenty cent is a little rarer than its 350-piece mintage would suggest. He also indicates that "Many of the survivors are cleaned, some drastically so; and I have seen several damaged and 3 or 4 circulated ones." Many were also likely melted.
This Premium Gem proof specimen displays a medley of medium intensity cobalt-blue, lavender, gold, and gray patina, that does not impede the striking field-motif contrast, especially when the coin is rotated beneath a light source. The strike is solid, imparting sharp and uniform definition to the design elements. Close inspection reveals just one trivial mark above the eagle's head, that we mention primarily because it may help in identifying this example for future catalogers.
