1877<20C> PR66 NGC. The 1877 is the first of two proof-only issues at the end of the Twenty Cent series. Mint records show that 510 pieces were produced in this year. However, 160 coins were melted at year's end as unsold, leaving a net mintage of only 350 pieces. High grade examples (above the PR64 level) are very scarce with solid Gems such as this being rarely encountered.
The fields on this piece are nicely reflective and richly colored, although differently hued from one side to the other. The obverse has sunset-golden color with an area of cobalt-blue and crimson at the upper left portion. The reverse is toned in a circular fashion with reddish-gold at the center, then crimson, magenta, and finally cobalt-blue at the outermost margin. A couple of tiny marks are noted under the 77 of the date, these being mentioned as future identifiers. Census: 23 in 66, 3 finer (11/05).
