1877 20C PR66 NGC. Ex: P. Kaufman. This is the first of two years at the end of the Twenty Cent series in which only proofs were produced. The Philadelphia Mint delivered 510 pieces in 1877, but only 350 coins were actually distributed by year's end. The balance of the mintage, 160 coins, were melted as unsold. Although two pairs of dies were prepared for this coinage, only one was used, with the second reverse remaining on hand for the 1878-dated delivery. This does not appear to have been a well preserved issue with the collecting public, as Gems are seldom seen in today's market, particularly if premium quality. The first PR66 representative that we have handled in quite some time, this coin is richly toned in dominant antique-copper shades. Lighter tan-gray hues are speckled about, particularly in the center of the reverse, and there are cornucopiae of sunset-orange, lilac, and electric-blue undertones on both sides. A blemish-free example that should be of obvious importance to advanced collectors. Population: 14 in 66, there are only two finer (7/02).From the Philip Kaufman Collection.
