<B>1877 20C PR66 Cameo NGC.</B></I> The 1877 twenty cent piece is a proof-only issue with a mintage of just 350 coins. In his discussion on the melting of twenty cent pieces upon the denomination's abolition in 1878, Walter Breen, in his <I>Encyclopedia of United States and Colonial Proof Coins</B></I>, contends that, "... probably about 300 of the 1877's escaped the melting pot ... ," but that the issue "... is a little rarer than its low mintage would suggest ... ." Certainly coins designated Cameo are difficult to come by. NGC and PCGS have graded about 70 such examples, the majority as PR63 and PR64.<BR> A melange of medium intensity cobalt-blue, orange, lavender, and purple toning does not obscure the pronounced field-motif contrast on this Premium Gem Cameo. A powerful strike renders crispness to the design features, heightening even more the coin's outstanding eye appeal. The faces of both sides are well preserved.
