1877 20C PR63 PCGS. On the obverse die lines extend fr
1877<20C> PR63 PCGS. On the obverse die lines extend from Liberty's foot toward the border, and the 1 is nearer the rim than the (last) 7. On the reverse a die line extends down from the leaf point to the C, and the wingtip extends to the S in CENTS. The left (facing) wing has incomplete feathers. Walter Breen, in his proof Encyclopedia, speculates on a 3:5 ratio of surviving 1877s to 1878s, i.e., about three-eighths, or 38%, of the proof survivors of these two issues should be 1877s. These speculations are fairly consistent with population data from NGC and PCGS, which show 507 1877s out of the total 1,176 proof examples certified of both dates, or 43%. This piece offers brilliant silver-gold fields with the luster a bit muted, and lightly hairlined. The contrast is nearly sufficient for a Cameo designation.
