1877 $20 MS64 PCGS. Many of the Liberty Head double ea
1877 $20 MS64 PCGS. Many of the Liberty Head double eagles from this era are considered to be common dates, and are available in all grades through the lowest Mint State grade levels. Few have survived in higher Mint State grades, a characteristic that is true for even the most common of issues. This 1877 issue is a typical example. The mintage of 397,670 coins is actually rather significant for these coins, especially from the Philadelphia Mint. Nearly all entered commerce, and today only 300 Mint State examples have been certified by PCGS. From that total, 286 have received grades from MS60 to MS62, another 13 coins have been graded MS63, and this solitary example has been certified at MS64. (The other major grading service, NGC, has likewise encapsulated just one MS64 and none finer.)
Known for its tendency for flashiness and as the first year of the Type Three design, this exceptional 1877 double eagle certainly lives up to its reputation. Both sides exhibit a dazzling, semi-reflective appearance and frosty features beneath a layer of reddish-orange patina that is enhanced by lime-green accents in the fields and near the peripheries. Scattered facial marks and a trio of reeding marks on Liberty's neck separate this piece from potential Gem status. Population: 1 in 64, 0 finer (11/06).
From The Kutasi Collection.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
