1877 $2.50 Liberty Mint Error PCGS PF34 DCAM
Bright with tawny-gold color, both sides exhibit scattered blemishes (as per the grade), but a smooth mirror finish in the fields provides the foundation for the extremely bold relief devices. Liberty as well as the eagle are frosted. Heavily frosted, in fact, and so the grade is "deep" cameo instead of the more lightly satin-frosted later dates of the 1900s.

With only 20 Proofs minted in 1877, far fewer auction records than for highly trumpeted 1875. Recent sales: (1) the Chapman, Clapp, Eliasberg:225 specimen brought $12,100, was slabbed PCGS-65, and reappeared in Superior's "Connoisseur" sale at $39,600. (2) The Trompeter 2/92:57 at $9,350 may be the Eliasberg example, as the same lint mark is described at "Connoisseur":80, but the coppery toning spot there described is gone (it was not visible on the Eliasberg illustration either); (3) Superior's 2/92:2553 we sold a PCGS Proof 65 at $31,350; (4) Stack's 10/95:1459, "Gem"; (5) Stack's 9/97:1231, "Gem"; (6) Heritage 1/98:7637, NGC Proof 67 Cameo, $39,100; (7) Akers-Pittman 5/98:1836, "Choice" $28,600; (8) Bowers 5/2000 Bass III:239 PCGS Proof 65 $18,400.
