1877<1C> MS66 Red and Brown PCGS. Eagle Eye Photo Seal. A lovely, boldly struck representative that is uncommonly lustrous and void of appreciable signs of contact or carbon. The obverse has mellowed in colorful blue and rose iridescent shades, filtering in glimpses of bright orange in the areas surrounding the devices. Primarily olive-tan in color, the reverse also shows a streak of mint-green toning down the right side of the wreath along with subtle rose-violet highlights. Microscopic freckles of darker toning can be detected in the center of the reverse and a ghost outline of the portrait results from die clashing.
In the aftermath of the Mint Act of February 21, 1857, untold thousands of large cents were melted to provide planchets for small cent production. The abolition of the two cent piece in 1873 provided a further source of copper that helped keep Indian Head cent mintage figures strong through 1876. In 1877, however, the federal government's supply of recycled copper was exhausted and, while government agents hunted for outside sources of coinage metal, small cent production bottomed out at a comparatively small 852,500 pieces. While the final-year 1909-S has a lower mintage (309,000 pieces), its branch mint and final year status combined with greater public awareness resulted in a more substantial number being tucked away before entering commerce. Consequently, the 1877 is the undisputed key to this widely collected series and a coin that is well known to even the most casual collector. As further proof of its fame, the 1877 Indian Cent has claim to its own postage stamp (a diminutive 13 Cents issue from the 1970s). The beauty and charm of this Premium Gem representative will certainly excite any and all potential bidders. Population: 3 in 66, 0 finer (11/05).
