Lot of 2. 1) T.C. Power & Bro., Freighters and Forwarding Merchants, Military and Indian Traders, Fort Benton, Montana Territory. Letter of account paid in full issued to Mess. J.W. McKnight & Co., Fort Shaw, Montana Territory. With slight staining to left upper crease. 8" x 10". 2) Bill of exchange issued to J.W. McKnight for a list of 47 goods including coffee, saddlery, tobacco, sarsaparilla, etc. With vignette of train pulling from station. Slight tear at left of center crease. 10" x 15". Montana was still a wilderness in 1860 and Fort Benton was the only outpost east of the Rockies where there was settlement. Fort Benton later became a part of Chouteau County, named after Charles P. Chouteau, an early fur trader associated with the Fort Benton outpost [Sanders, Helen Fitzgerald, 1913].
