1876<T$1> MS64 PCGS. Type One Obverse and Reverse. At the time they were authorized, Trade Dollars seemed to be a good idea, providing competition for various other silver issues that were often exported for trade purposes, including the Mexican Pesos and Eight Reales coins. By 1876, production was limited primarily to San Francisco. At Philadelphia, only 455,000 Trade Dollars were minted, and it is likely that many of these were later melted. The Act of July 22, 1876 demonetized the Trade Dollar, and after that date they were only worth their bullion value. This example is fully brilliant and sharply struck with frosty silver luster. The only weakness of design is slightly at Liberty's head and the right claw.
From The Daniel D. Biddle Collection, Part One.
