1876-S<T$1> MS64 PCGS. Type One Obverse. Type Two Reverse. As the high mintage of 5.2 million pieces might suggest, the 1876-S is among the more common Trade dollars, with examples often appearing in type collections. While many coins were undoubtedly shipped to the Orient, some probably circulated throughout the western United States, particularly during the months before Congress demonetized the Trade dollar on July 22 of that year.
The Type I Obverse / Type II Reverse combination seems to be one of the rarest of the three known hub varieties of this issue. This important near-Gem is lustrous and satiny with a peripheral overlay of rainbow-like patina. There are no outwardly distracting bagmarks on either side, and the otherwise strong strike wanes ever so slightly over Liberty's head on the obverse, and on the eagle's left (facing) wing on the reverse.
