1876-S $20 MS64 PCGS. The 1876-S double eagle has one of the largest mintages for a Type Two double eagle (1,597,000 pieces), and is easily located in grades up through MS61. Large numbers of this date were shipped to Europe and South America at the time of issue, and many have returned to the United States over the last two or three decades (Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth, 2006).
Whispers of light green are seen interspersed among the apricot-gold coloration that rests on the highly lustrous surfaces of this near-Gem example, and a relatively sharp strike leaves no areas of significant softness on the design elements. A handful of minute contact marks prevents full Gem classification. Population: 9 in 64, 1 finer (7/07).

Coin Engraver: James B.
