1876-S $20 MS62 PCGS. The 1876-S has the second-highest mintage of the Type Two double eagles, and if one divides the 1873 into Open 3 and Close 3 varieties, the 1876-S might take the crown. Garrett and Guth consider the 1876-S "easily located in grades of Very Fine to MS-61," coincidentally the grade of the finest Smithsonian example, according to them, but anything finer becomes surprisingly elusive. The straw-gold surfaces of this unworn example have vibrant luster. Scattered light to moderate abrasions appear on the devices, well struck for this issue, and in the gleaming fields. The overall look of the coin suggests a finer grade at first glance, though closer inspection reveals that the coin is not so well-preserved. It is, however, an attractive representative.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
