1876-S $2 1/2 MS63 PCGS. Ex: Bass. Peach-gold color co
1876-S<$2 1/2> MS63 PCGS. Ex: Bass. Peach-gold color covers this coin, with a bit of rose highlighting the recessed areas of the devices. Ample frosty luster is seen most prominently on the reverse. A bit weakly struck in the centers, normal for the date, yet well-struck for the date and more sharply struck than at least two of the other coins that have been bestowed similar grades by PCGS. The die line (as struck), which is visible on Liberty's jaw, appears on all 1876 quarter eagles from both mints. At 5,000 coins struck, the 1876-S is the second lowest mintage quarter eagle from the San Francisco mint, and uncirculated pieces are scarce. Those reaching the MS63 grade, such as this piece, are scarcer still, and indeed the major grading services have not yet graded an example of the date finer. Population: 4 in 63, 0 finer (8/06).
From The Della Collection.
