1876-S<$2 1/2> MS61 NGC. After the 1854-S, the 1876-S boasts the lowest mintage among San Francisco Mint Liberty Quarter Eagles. With just 5,000 pieces produced, it should come as no surprise that the '76-S is a rare coin at all levels of preservation. Typically struck for the issue, the present example is a little softly defined over the highpoints of the central devices. A small lump on Liberty's lower jaw is diagnostic, and the surfaces, while somewhat scuffy, are remarkably free of sizeable distractions for a frontier era gold coin at the BU level. Lovely golden-rose color yields to light haziness in the right obverse field. Population: 10 in 61, 4 finer (4/05).
