1876-S $2 1/2 MS61 NGC. After the 1854-S, the 1876-S boasts the lowest mintage among San Francisco Mint Liberty Quarter Eagles. With just 5,000 pieces produced, it should come as no surprise that the '76-S is a rare coin at all levels of preservation. Typically struck for the issue, the present example is a little softly defined over the highpoints of the central devices. A small, as struck lump on Liberty's jaw is diagnostic, and the surfaces, while somewhat scuffy, are remarkably free of sizeable distractions for a frontier era gold coin at the BU level. Lovely golden-rose color yields to light haziness in the right obverse field. We last offered a similarly graded 1876-S Two-and-a-Half as lot 7961 in our January 1999 FUN Signature Sale. That coin was certified by PCGS, and it traded hands for $2,990. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Premier carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions.
