1876 S$1 Commercial Dollar, Judd-1473, Pollock-1624, R.7, PR64 Red PCGS. Ex: Bass. An extremely rare entry into the Liberty by the Seashore series. On this obverse die, the sailing ship in the background has furled sails, and (somehow) emits smoke from the top of the main mast. The reverse is a commercial dollar die which has the motto GOD OUR TRUST on a scroll beneath the standard legends of weight and fineness. A wreath and cornucopia separate UNITED STATES OF AMERICA from the other legends. The reverse die was used to strike patterns dated 1871, and has to be considered a mule with an 1876 obverse, since Trade dollar was the preferred term instead of Commercial dollar by 1873. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. Since only two silver pieces were struck from these dies, Judd-1473, four known, is the best opportunity for collectors to obtain the die marriage. This well struck cherry-red near-Gem has a mere hint of contact on the chest and extended arm, and the obverse has a smattering of minor carbon flecks.
Ex: King Farouk; M.H.
