1876 Newspaper from New York- Tilden and Hayes
1876 Newspaper from New York- Tilden and Hayes Controversy. This issue of The World" was printed for Wednesday, November 15, 1876: Vol. XVII., No. 846. It features an article entitled: "Tilden's Triumph - The Candidate of Reform Unquestionably Elected - All Quiet Throughout the Land". The Presidential election of 1876 is one of the most disputed in history; Tilden had handily defeated Rutherford B. Hayes in the popular votes, however, a portion of the electoral votes were in dispute. Many believe a compromise was struck and in return for the South's acquiescence, the North would remove its troops, thus ending Reconstruction. Hayes was put into office, making this newspaper a wonderful novelty. In choice condition; slightly brittle and yellowed as machine-pulp newspapers usually are but very sturdy and clean.
