1876 Indian cent<1C>--Struck on Three Cent Nickel Planchet--MS64 NGC. 1.7 grams. The attribution and weight are both per the NGC holder. This is an intriguing Indian cent error (or pattern per older numismatic experience). Standard weight for the three-cent nickel coin is 1.94 grams, with a tolerance of plus or minus 0.26 grains. Therefore, this is just inside the lower limit for a three-cent nickel planchet, being 1.68 grams. There were no other similar weight planchets of the copper and nickel composition in use at the Philadelphia Mint in 1876. This variety has been described as a pattern in past literature beginning with the Judd pattern reference where the number J-1451 was assigned.
Perhaps three or four of these are known. This example is different than the Auction '85 coin sold by Paramount. Andrew Pollock mentioned two appearances in the King Farouk collection, and one of those two is almost certainly the same as that illustrated at USPatterns.com. This example is very sharply struck with reflective fields, the reverse almost fully prooflike. The fields exhibit some very minor roughness and myriad abrasions, most of which are almost certainly representative of the original planchet quality and not post-striking blemishes. This is an exceptional mint error that bridges the gap between error collectors and pattern collectors. Of course, the Indian cent specialist will just have to own this as well. Grab your wallet and come along for the ride.

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
