1876 G$1 PR66 Ultra Cameo NGC. As a date, the 1876 is among the rarest Type Three Gold Dollars from the Philadelphia Mint. Official records report that only 3,200 business strike and 45 proof Gold Dollars were produced in this, the Centennial year of the United States. With such a low mintage, it should come as no surprise to numismatists that many business strike 1876 Gold Dollars are semi, if not fully prooflike in finish. The present example, however, is an unmistakable proof, and it is attributable by the presence of faint die file marks (as produced) in the obverse field at the AM in AMERICA. Intense orange-gold color envelops both sides of this wholly original Gem. The devices are fully struck and richly frosted, and they contrast boldly with the "coal-black" fields. The absence of distracting post-production blemishes forces us to rely on a small circular planchet void (as produced) in the reverse field between the two Ls in DOLLAR. This coin is the only proof 1876 Gold Dollar currently certified with an Ultra (or Deep) Cameo designation (10/02), and it is also one of no more than 25 coins believed extant in all grades.
