1876 G$1 Gold Dollar, Judd-1478, Pollock-1631, R.7, PR64 Brown PCGS. Regular die trials issue for the 1876 Gold Dollar. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. While this coin is officially listed in Pollock as R.7, it appears to at least be a high R.7, and may be R.8. Apparently only three pieces are known and the Farouk specimen is untraced since 1954. Sometimes it is instructive to see which collections lacked a certain issue. The list is long and distinguished for this die trial. It was missing from Fred Olsen (1944), Gaston DiBello (1970), Armand Champa (1972), Garrett (Stack's, 1976), Garrett (Bowers and Ruddy, 1979-80), Rudy Sieck (1981), Thomas Bergin (1984), and Harry Bass (1999). The fields on this piece are deeply reflective and most of each side are covered with brown and blue patina. However, significant portions of each side, specifically the areas around the devices, still retain noticeable portions of deep cherry-red luster. Conservatively graded at the PR64 level. This is a die trial for the serious pattern specialist, and undoubtedly it is a piece that the successful bidder will have to stretch to acquire.
