1876 C.S.A. President Jefferson Davis Amnesty Debate
January 10, 1876-Dated Post Civil War Reconstruction Period, Imprint titled: “Jefferson David - Amnesty -- In The House of Representatives, Monday Janauary 10, 1876” with Speeches For and Against Congressional Amnesty for C.S.A. President Jefferson Davis, Very Fine.
A very rare original Printed Speech in Pamphlet form published during the period of Reconstruction after the Civil War, measuring 6” x 9.5” with 32 pages and string bound. Untrimmed, expected light aging along edges, pages 21 & 22 missing, page 20 torn with paper loss. It highlights several speeches in the United States House of Representatives over the issue of Amnesty for former Confederate States of America President JEFFERSON DAVIS. The selected speeches were delivered January 10th to 14th, 1876 made by James G. Blaine, Benjamin Hill, and future President James A. Garfield. Both Blaine and Garfield were Opposed to Amnesty. The effort failed for Amnesty. Jefferson Davis, a former U.S. soldier, Senator and Secretary of War, did not have his citizenship restored until 1978 under President Carter. Apparently published by Congress, it is providing the actual arguments debated towards the granting of Amnesty, which was a major issue at that time.
