1876-CC T$1 MS62 PCGS. Type I Obverse / Type II Reverse. Tall CC. This coin was previously offered as lot 4112 in our April 2002 sale of the Morris Silverman Collection, where it was described as: "The Carson City Mint halted Trade Dollar production in April 1876 after only 509,000 coins were produced with that date. While not the rarest Trade Dollar in an absolute sense, the '76-CC is particularly elusive in Mint State. Interestingly, the 1876-CC is just as rare, if not rarer, than the key date 1878-CC in grades above the AU level. This fact is not, however, widely known, probably because the former issue is generally available in worn condition whereas the 1878-CC is elusive in all grades. The 1876-CC is also a difficult coin to locate with any degree of eye appeal, as most technically Uncirculated coins are plagued by poor luster and/or excessive bagmarks. Not so the present BU example. True, the surfaces display scattered, grade-defining abrasions that include a few reeding marks in the left obverse field, but the luster is pleasing and the eye appeal benefits greatly from a moderate overlay of champagne-apricot patina around the obverse border and throughout the reverse. The needle sharp strike is also noteworthy for the type, every feature displaying virtually full definition. Clearly, this is an impressive representative of this often overlooked CC-mint Trade Dollar. Most 1876-CC are of the Type I Obverse / Type II Reverse combination." To this description we add that the Tall CC variety of this issue is not at all common in Mint State, with most survivors displaying some degree of wear. From the Andy Geosits Collection of Trade Dollars.
