1876-CC T$1 MS60 NGC. Breen-5804. Type One Obverse and Reverse, Micro CC. The 1876-CC trade dollar is a rare coin in any Mint State grade. This 1876-CC is an example of the rare Breen-5804 variety, with the widely spaced, Micro CC mintmark and the Type One obverse and reverse, although it is perhaps a bit less rare than formerly believed. The distance between the two C's is nearly equal to their combined height. The Breen Encyclopedia (1988) lists the Breen-5804 as "Ex. rare," and even Bowers' two-volume silver dollar Encyclopedia (1993) calls the coin "quite scarce." Even so, we have offered this variety (not necessarily in Mint State) five times in auction over the past few years.
This example is strictly Mint State, with untoned, reflective surfaces coated by a light gray patina, and there is absolutely no trace of rub on any of the highpoints. A planchet flaw around Liberty's ear area has created a small indentation there, and there are a couple of noticeable abrasions, one on Liberty's right (facing) arm and one in the right obverse field, that together with a few smaller abrasions account for the grade. The reverse is choice for the grade and generally problem-free. This is an important and underrated coin for the Trade dollar specialist, one that represents a significant opportunity and should incite spirited bidding. The NGC Census Report for the 1876-CC (all varieties) enumerates nine coins in MS60, with 41 finer, while the PCGS Population Report lists two examples in MS60, with 25 finer (1/06).
