1876-CC 10C MS65 Specimen NGC. Struck from the Type One reverse hub, and we believe this coin was struck from the 101, Reverse A die pairing. However, the right side of the reverse is not weak on this piece--a characteristic of all known examples from this die pairing--but then one would not expect weakness on a Specimen striking. This coin is unlisted in Breen and Greer. In fact, the only record we can find is the sale of a PCGS PR65 in the March 2000 Superior Sale, which brought $41,400. The surfaces on this piece are indistinguishable from a Philadelphia Mint proof of this era. The fields are deeply mirrored and there is no trace of cartwheel around the devices. Likewise, the striking details are fully brought up in all areas. The rims are even and squared off with complete denticulation on each side--an important attribute considering the weakness mentioned above that is characteristic of Reverse A coins. This fullness on the right side of the reverse proves that this piece was struck twice as it would have to be multiply struck in order to completely bring up the details in that area of the die. We do not know the occasion for striking this coin, but we can safely speculate that it was probably tied to Centennial celebrations in Nevada in the summer of 1876. Each side of this important coin is covered with deep, variegated golden, cerulean blue, lime-green, and gray toning. As for distinguishing marks that could be used for pedigree purposes, the only one that might be used is a small contact mark on Liberty's bent arm near the elbow. An outstanding Seated Dime and a coin that merits serious consideration by advanced collectors and numismatic researchers.
