1876-CC<$10> AU53 NGC. CC-mint Eagles from the 1870s are notoriously difficult to collect. Most issues are rare or very rare; the exception is the comparatively available 1874-CC. Carson City struck 138,441 double eagles in 1876, but their production of eagles was much more parsimonious. A scant 4,696 pieces were struck, and given the nature of the Nevada frontier during the era, none have certified as Mint State by either NGC or PCGS. Concerning this issue, Breen states, "Usually weak in centers." By that standard, the present piece is impressive, since the shield is sharp and Liberty's ear and nearby curls show only moderate softness. The clean peach-gold surfaces appear smooth to the naked eye, and even beneath a glass, only a single mark near star 3 bears mention. Census: 11 in 53, 6 finer (2/06).
