1876 50C MS67 PCGS. This coin was previously offered as lot 6641 in our April 2002 Central States Signature Sale, where it was cataloged as: "Using silver mined from the rich Comstock Lode, the Philadelphia Mint churned out impressive numbers of Half Dollars from 1875 through 1877. These coins were meant to retire the hated fifty cent "shinplasters" from the Civil War era, and, indeed, most of the 8.4 million coins delivered in 1876 entered circulation. Nonetheless, enough Mint State specimens have survived that type collectors will have little difficulty locating coins that grade up to an including the MS64 level. As a Gem, this issue is scarce, and this is the only Superb Gem reported at the two major grading services (7/02). The thick endowment of mint frost is truly impressive, and there are no areas of bothersome striking incompleteness. Mottled emerald-green and tan-gray patina overlays the obverse periphery and much of the reverse. A coin that is destined for inclusion in the finest type set."
