1876<$5> AU55 PCGS. During the Civil War, Federal paper money replaced gold coins in circulation, except in the remote west. Gold coins rarely appeared again in commerce until 1878, when paper money finally traded at par with gold coin. Low mintages for were the rule for Philadelphia issues, and a scant 1,432 Half Eagles were struck in 1876. The present example has a good strike and a clean albeit somewhat subdued appearance. A minor pinscratch beneath the fifth star provides the sole mentionable mark. Population: 3 in 55, 8 finer (11/05).
From The Guadalupe Collection.
