<B>1876 $3 PR65 Cameo PCGS.</B></I> The 1876 proof-only three dollar gold had a paltry mintage of 45 pieces, with just 25-30 coins believed extant (per Breen, 1988, who also states that at least seven examples are impaired). According to Breen, 20 examples were produced on February 19, from "perfect" dies. The remaining 25 pieces, minted on June 13, have slight traces of die rust in the feathers. This, apparently, is one of the latter, although the die rust Breen mentions really is only evident in trace amounts, using a magnifier.<BR> Interestingly, the 1876 is not as rare as the proof 1861, 1874, or 1878, but the lack of a business strike 1876 three dollar explains the higher profile of the present issue. One of only six Cameo Gems certified through the combined efforts of NGC and PCGS, and the only one at PCGS, this untoned coin is exquisitely preserved. The fully struck devices are richly frosted, and the fields are highly reflective, with no distracting blemishes or hairlines noted on either side. A few striations (as struck) are seen in the center of the reverse, but the only worthwhile pedigree marker is a wispy pinscratch that crosses Liberty's cheekbone, extending through her hair, the letter E in LIBERTY, and to the edge of the crown. The last Gem Cameo 1876 three dollar gold piece that we offered was a PR65 Cameo NGC coin that realized $38,531 as lot 7901 in our September 2003 Long Beach Signature Sale.
