1876 $3 PR62 Cameo PCGS. For the second year in a row, 1876[$3] PR62 Cameo PCGS.
1876<$3> PR62 Cameo PCGS. For the second year in a row, the Philadelphia Mint produced no three dollar gold pieces for circulation. The facility did, however, deliver 45 proof specimens from a single pair of dies. The earliest group of 20 coins was produced on February 19. The dies were then stored until a further 25 group of coins was delivered on June 13. The obverse die was improperly stored in the interim, resulting in rust developing over Liberty's portrait. Under a loupe, small rust pits can be discerned in Liberty's headdress, confirming this coin as one of the 25 pieces from the later delivery. This example features lovely black-on-gold Cameo contrast between the frosted devices and the glassy fields, with a hint of olive-green on Liberty's face. A few trivial ticks in the fields and a couple of nicks on Liberty also reveal themselves under a loupe. The reverse has a small spot of dark toning on the 7 in the date. The reverse die is rotated about 20 degrees counterclockwise. Despite these minuscule imperfections, this coin maintains significant eye appeal. The PCGS Population Report records this Proof 62 Cameo as the sole and highest example of the 1876 within the Cameo designation, while four other coins have graded higher within the Deep Cameo designation (11/05).
