1876 $3 PR61 PCGS. The proof-only 1876 three dollar, with an estimated mintage of 65 to 75 pieces (David Bowers, The United States $3 Gold Pieces), is an immensely popular issue that is well known among both dedicated gold specialists and more casual numismatists. Bowers estimates 45 to 60 examples have survived.
Although the present example exhibits some grade-limiting hairlines that show up under magnification, the overall eye appeal is above average for the PR61 grade level. The color is a deep, rich, green-gold shade over which orange-gold highlights have gathered. There are no sizeable or unsightly handling marks, and the only noteworthy pedigree marker is a lintmark in the reverse field above the S in DOLLARS.

Coin Engraver: James B.
