1876 $3 PR61 PCGS.<p>Although not quite as rare as the 1875, the proof-only 1876 is an immensely popular issue that is well known among both dedicated gold specialists and more casual numismatists. Actually, the 1876 is not as rare as some other proofs in this series (such as the 1861, 1874, and 1878), but the lack of a similarly dated business strike delivery explains the greater demand that this issue enjoys. Only 45 proofs were originally produced, and (unfortunately) a decent number of the 33 or 34 survivors are impaired. Although the present example exhibits some grade-limiting hairlines, the overall eye appeal is above average for the PR61 grade level. The color is a deep, rich, green-gold shade over which orange-gold highlights have gathered. There are no sizeable or unsightly handling marks, and the only noteworthy pedigree marker is a lintmark (as struck) in the reverse field above the S in DOLLARS. This is the first 1876 Three Dollar gold piece that we have handled since our September 1998 Long Beach Signature Sale. That coin was graded PR63 by NGC, and we have no record of offering a PR61 specimen going back at least 10 years. Obviously, the appearance of this coin is a significant occasion for us as well as our bidders. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Premier carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions.
