1876 $3 Gold NGC PF55
A timeless rarity in any grade, the 1876 is only available in Proof condition. None were struck for circulation. The Philadelphia Mint only struck 45 of these, with perhaps a few more struck later as special favors to collectors. This coin appears to have slipped into circulation and is now graded Proof 55, meaning an ever so lightly impaired Proof, which is perfectly acceptable for such a rare date. A glass will note some minor dull marks on Liberty's face, wear on the hair, and the fields show the familiar hairlines expected on a Proof 55 coin, with contact marks on both sides. The color is a pleasant warm-gold tone, still reflective and mirrored, plus nicely contrasted devices. This famous rarity is only superceded by the even more famous 1875 Proof-only three, and one that is seldom offered in any grade, so don't expect to find a better one anytime soon--you may be kept waiting. With the price of gold beginning to rise, what could be a better time to put this key date away? (#8040)
