1876 25C PR68 NGC. Briggs 8-H. The otherwise relatively common proof 1876 Seated Quarter (1,150 pieces produced) is unique at the certified PR68 level of preservation (1/03). Uncommonly high for the type, this issue's original mintage is most likely explained by the federal government's anticipation of increased proof sales during the United States' centennial year. Struck from the leftover reverse die of 1872, this coin has survived the passage of time without acquiring even the most trivial indication of mishandling. What's more, both sides have acquired a rich endowment of original toning in blended antique-copper, lavender-gray, salmon-pink, golden-champagne, and blue-green colors. The more vivid hues are mostly evident at direct angles, but even the most casual glance will reveal full striking definition over all features. Uniformly brilliant in finish with awe-inspiring eye appeal.Ex: Orlando Sale (Superior, 10/1992), lot 393; John and Rebecca Moores Collection of Important U.S. Coins (Sotheby's 11/1999), lot 17.From the Philip Kaufman Collection.
