1876 20C PR68 NGC. The twenty cent piece, or "double disme," was a short-lived coin that was primarily produced as another outlet for Comstock silver. The 1876 was the second year of production and only two other years, 1877 and 1878, were struck in a limited production run in proof format only. As one would expect, the surfaces of this piece are nearly perfect. Both sides are brilliant. The fields show the reflectivity seen on proofs, but what is unexpected is the significant overlay of mint frost on the devices. This results in a cameo contrast that has curiously been overlooked by NGC. When searching for pedigree identifiers, the only one we could find is a tiny milling mark in the left obverse field between star 4 and Liberty's arm. Only two other pieces have been so graded by NGC and, of course, none are finer (5/07).

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
