1876 20C PR64 PCGS. The Twenty Cent Piece was struck for just four years, since its similar size and appearance to the Seated Quarter caused confusion in commerce. Business strikes of the type are plentiful, courtesy of the 1875-S. However, proofs are scarce, and the majority of proofs are from the initial year of the series, 1875. While not as rare as the two proof-only dates that follow, the 1876 is seldom encountered in Choice condition. This well struck specimen features light peripheral mauve and russet color, while the centers are brilliant. The devices possess noticeable frost, although not to a sufficient degree to attain a Cameo designation from PCGS.
Ex: Stack's (6/01), lot 975.
From The Richard J.
