1876<$20> PR63 Cameo NGC. This regal coin is double struck on both the obverse and reverse, with at least a five degree rotation between the strikes. The strength of the second strike nearly obliterated any evidence of the first strike, but it can clearly be seen on stars nine through eleven, and on the upper portion of Liberty's hair bun. Similarly on the reverse, doubling can be seen on the Y D. of TWENTY D. and the ICA of AMERICA (these areas are directly opposite of each other). The Cameo contrast adds to the general appeal of this desirable coin, with the mirror fields are well preserved. We do note some hairlines in the fields which account for the grade, otherwise this coin would grade much higher. Centennial year issue, and also in demand as this is a Type II Double eagle. Identifiable by the double striking and by a minute planchet flake centered above the glory rays below the O in OF. Numerous small lumps are seen on the obverse, from a slightly rusty die used to coin these, one located above Liberty's eye, a few more down the back of her face and neck. Perhaps two dozen are known from the original mintage of 45 pieces, this coin certainly one of the finer ones to survive.
From the Ed Trompeter Collection, and so noted on the NGC insert.
