1876<$2 1/2> PR65 Cameo NGC. Ex: Pittman. According to Mint records, just 45 proof quarter eagles were struck in 1876, and yet David Akers considers this date to be the most common proof quarter eagle of any date prior to 1882. Approximately half of the original mintage still exists today, and yet it is difficult to think of any coin as a common date when only a couple of dozen known examples exist. The physical appearance of this coin was ably described by Akers in the Pittman catalog: "Very sharply struck with a square edge, deep mirror fields, and brilliant medium yellow-gold color. There are some light hairlines and trivial contact marks in the field in front of Liberty's face and some light hairlines above the eagle's head. There is a partial wire rim on the obverse." We can only add that the devices have frosty luster with excellent cameo contrast.
Ex: B.A. Seaby (London, 8/25/1947); John Jay Pittman (David Akers, 5/1998), lot 1834.

Important notice
