1875 T$1 MS62 NGC. Type I Obverse / Type II Reverse. Due to their proximity to the Orient, the San Francisco and Carson City Mints bore the brunt of business strike Trade Dollar production, particularly in the middle years of the series. In 1875, the Philadelphia Mint delivered just 218,200 business strikes, its lowest output for the type. Although the rarity of chopmarked '75-P Trade Dollars in today's market suggests that this issue was not extensively exported, it is still a rare date in Mint State. In fact, the fabulous Morris Silverman Collection that we auctioned in April of this year lacked a business strike 1875. Nearly all Mint State 1875 Trade Dollars in today's hobby are of the Type I Obverse / Type II Reverse hub variety. This richly toned example displays apricot-gray central toning within halos of crimson-russet and electric-blue rim accents. The strike is bold in all areas save for the upper obverse, and scattered grade-defining abrasions in the obverse field before and after Liberty's torso are well concealed by the toning. A find for the advanced collector. From the Andy Geosits Collection of Trade Dollars. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
