1875-S/CC T$1 MS62 NGC. FS-012.5. Type One Reverse, La
1875-S/CC<T$1> MS62 NGC. FS-012.5. Type One Reverse, Large S. The more prominent of the two known S/CC reverses. The right C is lightly but nearly fully outlined. The left C is also evident, although faint. Unlike the 1900-O/CC silver dollar varieties, the 1875-S/CC was struck while the Carson City Mint was active. The reason for its existence can only be speculated. Perhaps the San Francisco Mint, which coined the majority of Trade dollars, had a dire need for reverse dies, and it was more expedient to overmintmark dies on hand rather than create new ones from an existing hub. Another possibility is that the Type One reverse hub was unusable, and a new (Type Two) hub had yet to be created. This latter theory is probably negated by the existence of 1876-dated Type Two pieces from all three mints. The present lustrous and faintly toned silver dollar is only lightly abraded for the grade. The strike is good, although Liberty's head and the right (facing) claw are generally soft. Census: 8 in 62, 7 finer (9/06).
