It was reintroduced in 1806, but it was not until 69 years later that this curious denomination was actually struck. The authorizing legislation for the twenty cent piece was introduced by Sen. John Percival Jones, of Nevada. Jones was an ardent silver advocate and undoubtedly much of the reason for this denomination's existence was to soak up more Comstock Lode silver. Twenty cent pieces were only struck for circulation for two years, 1875 and 1876, and then another two years in proof-only format in 1877 and 1878, before being completely discontinued. This is a lovely example that has bright, frosted mint luster. While not completely struck up in all areas, the devices are well defined, especially in the centers.
From The Troy Wiseman Collection.
