1875 G$1 MS64 PCGS. This beautiful near-Gem is fully prooflike in finish with rich copper-gold color that appears to lighten ever so slightly in the centers. This coin, however, is not a proof because it displays a thorn-like projection (as struck) into the obverse field from the bottom of Liberty's chin--the diagnostic feature of the business strike 1875 Gold Dollar. Sharp striking definition and a noteworthy lack of bothersome abrasions round out the list of positive attributes. The popularity of this issue among collectors was virtually assured at the time of delivery. After all, the Philadelphia Mint struck a mere 400 business strike and 20 proof Gold Dollars in 1875, which constitutes one of the lowest mintages in the entire 1849-1889 series.
