Half Eagles 1875-cc About Uncirculated 55. <b>Cleaned at one time, with resulting hairlines in the fields. Both sides show moderate contact marks, but nothing too severe or unsightly. Interestingly, this coin has had the edges shaved, causing the rim to be nearly oval, with narrowed full reeding all around. This procedure in all likelihood occurred during the coin's stint in circulation in the old West, in an effort to remove a tiny quantity of gold while not diminishing its exchangeable status at face value. Such occurrences were not unusual and there were a number of different ploys used, and if the perpetrators removed a tiny bit of gold from enough coins, substantial profits could be derived. Here is a wonderful opportunity for the specialist in Carson City Mint gold to obtain and interesting and historic relic. In spite of its aforementioned tampered with rims, it stands as one of the finest obtainable examples today from an original mintage of just 11,828. Strictly Mint State examples are very rare, and borderline Mint State examples are nearly as difficult to locate.
