1875-CC $20 Liberty PCGS MS62
The 1875-CC is among of the most popular of all Type Two issues for its natural rarity of the CC-mint origin and because Mint States are just not all that easy to find. This is a lovely, lustrous coin that has generous portions of bright frost intermixed as well - a splendid thing indeed. Sharply defined, although not quite 100% bold, with normal abrasions mainly around the devices rather than on the devices; the surfaces have attractive old-golden color with a slight overlay of peach color from the 10% alloy of copper.

Big things were cooking at the Mint and Treasury department in 1875. Congress, having passed the Coinage Act of 1873, continued apace with the Resumption Act of 1875 in which the mints readied for a resumption of gold and silver to paper money conversion which was scheduled to resume in 1879. While gold minting continued apace from 1874 and years prior, silver coinage expanded enormously in 1875, 1876 and 1877, when an influx of old-tenor coins from the Civil War days all of a sudden inundated America's banks. Most double eagles struck in the 1870s were either exported or used as currency backing (the government, by law, was required to keep on hand $100 million in gold in the Treasury). (#8974)
