1875-CC<$20> AU53 PCGS. The mintage of this issue is similar to the previous year, with 111,151 coins minted. Like the 1874-CC, examples are readily available in the marketplace, and this issue may be even more plentiful. For the collector of Carson City coins by design type, the issues from 1874 to 1876 are logical candidates. This was the year of massive production increases among silver coins at the Carson City Mint. One estimate suggested that 3 million dollars worth of silver was being mined from the Comstock Lode every month, and much of this silver went right to the Carson City Mint. Although gold production did not increase proportionately, there was still substantial production, especially in the double eagle series.
The substantial increase in production meant that coins were being minted quite rapidly, and an associated decrease in quality was the result. While some double eagles exhibit sharp details, many others were weakly struck. This example is an attractive piece with fully lustrous surfaces and slight abrasions. Splashes and wisps of pale orange toning add to the eye appeal. A desirable specimen, which should garner considerable bidding activity. Housed in a green label PCGS holder.
From The Wyoming Collection.
