1875-CC $10 XF40 PCGS. Winter 1-A, the only known dies (?). The attribution is correct, but we do not know whether or not there is only one die marriage for the 1875-CC. Winter accounts for only one, but Breen reports a second with a more sharply impressed CC mintmark than that seen on examples of Winter 1-A. Among Carson City Eagles from this decade, the 1875-CC is more challenging to locate than the 1871-CC, 1874-CC, and 1876-CC. A mere 65-75 coins are believed extant from a paltry original mintage of 7,715 pieces. Writing in 2001, Winter and Halperin state that "accurately graded Extremely Fine-40 pieces are about the best quality that it usually seen..." This is a rich looking, green-gold representative with even wear and typical definition for the grade as well as the issue. Softness of detail over Liberty's hair curls and the lower reverse eagle explains why the 1875-CC is the most poorly struck Eagle from this branch mint. There is a smattering of light and moderate abrasions on both sides, and a few spots hug the reverse border. Accuracy also compels us to mention some obverse haziness over and before Liberty's chin. From the Ashland City Collection.
