1875 5C MS66 PCGS. Although this issue's original mintage is significantly higher than some later date Shield nickels, it does not appear to have been as carefully preserved. With most of the 2 million examples produced in 1875 probably seeing extensive circulation, it should come as no surprise to students of the series that this issue ranks third in rarity in the Uncirculated grades (per Peters and Mohon, 1995). The first so graded example that we have offered this year, this premium quality Gem is bursting with frosty mint luster. Neither side displays any appreciable toning, and the surfaces are also free of distracting carbon and grade-limiting abrasions. A shallow graze in the obverse field before the date is noted solely for accuracy, and there are also fascinating die cracks (as produced) in a few areas around the central obverse device and over the lower left reverse. Population: 9 in 66, 0 finer (12/06).

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
