1875 $5 Sailor Head Ten Dollar, Judd-1444 Gilt, Pollock-1588, Low R.7, PR65 NGC. William Barber's Sailor Head obverse is paired with a reverse design similar to that of the issued trade dollar. Differences from the trade dollar reverse, other than the denomination, include the motto IN GOD WE TRUST beneath the eagle within a scroll. E PLURIBUS UNUM lacks the scroll seen on the trade dollar, as first issued in 1875. Struck in copper with a reeded edge, later gilt. Since there are only two known gold examples from these dies (Judd-1443), and none have appeared at auction in over twenty years, even the most advanced pattern specialists will have to settle for a specimen of Judd-1444. (The aluminum and white metal varieties, Judd-1445 and Judd-1445a respectively, are unique.) This flashy piece is precisely struck and has beautiful orange-yellow toning. The preservation is exemplary, and the gilding is well-executed, with no indication of the underlying copper, even on the highpoints. NGC has certified five examples of Judd-1444, and the present piece is the single finest by two grades.
From The Jones Beach Collection.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
