1875<$5> AU50 PCGS. Other than the proof-only 1887, the 1875 has the lowest mintage of any issue of Liberty Half Eagles. Excluding the 20 proofs, a mere 200 pieces were struck, even fewer than the famous 1854-S rarity. If gold issues of all denominations with recorded business strikes mintages are considered, only the 1875 Eagle has a smaller production. It comes as no surprise that not many business strike 1875 Half Eagles have survived. PCGS and NGC combined have certified a total of nine pieces across all grades. Among these, the single finest certified resides in an NGC AU55 holder. The appearance of a PCGS AU50 example is of obvious importance to the rare date gold specialist, since several years may pass before another similar opportunity arises. The present representative has a good strike, particularly sharp on the stars. Reflective luster fills the legends and outlines the devices. Abrasions are minimal, and a thin vertical mark beneath the U in TRUST is noted solely for pedigree purposes. Certified in a green label PCGS holder.
From The Guadalupe Collection.
